The Beijing Platform for Action was adopted at the 4th World Conference on Women in 1995, where 185 states agreed to advance women’s rights in 12 critical areas of concern. Civil society organizations played a key role in seeing the Platform for Action come into reality, and have since continued to pressure states to fully implement their commitments. 20 years later, it remains a powerful source of guidance and inspiration.
Every 5 years a review of progress made worldwide is undertaken; the 20 year review process just took place at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in 2015, which was proceeded by national and regional reviews. These processes finally culminated in a Political Declaration agreed to by States:
The Beijing Platform for Action is one of the key agreements CFUW points to as a roadmap for realizing gender equality and women’s empowerment in Canada. We communicate this often to the Government of Canada.
